If you want to be an efficient moose hunter there are some things you should know. First of all, you must do everything in your power to remain undetectable because otherwise your chances for success will be drastically reduced. Besides this, you must have a very good eye sight and sensible ears so that you can hear the slightest sound.

Purchasing the proper equipment is a crucial aspect so you must take it into consideration before you start your hunting adventure. For moose hunting, rifles are the best choice but for fun, some hunters use a simple handgun. Of course, only experienced hunters can have noticeable results using this piece of weaponry.

The next important thing to do is choosing the proper caliber and what grain of bullet you will use. First thing in order, all your hunting should be done using a weapon which you feel comfortable with; if you purchased a weapon recently you should exercise first, get familiar with the weapon and only afterwards use it for your hunts. If you plan to use a rifle/revolver that causes a big kick when you fire it then you should know that the chances of flinching are big which with other words means that your chances for a kill are reduced; you will only wound the animal or in the worst case, miss the shot. Many people killed moose using a 30/06 which is considered to be one of the most lightest rifles available.

Bigger calibers like the .300 Winchester or .338 and the .375 H&H should only be used in the Alaskan bush. Basically, any rifle capable of shooting a bullet of 150 grains ( the more the better ) at 2500 fps ( also, the more the better ) will do just fine for moose hunts. Some good choices would be : .308, .30-06 as we have mentioned before, .300 magnum, .338 magnum, .337 magnum calibers.

Some concrete examples : 30-06 Springfield , 308 Winchester , 300 Winchester Magnum, 7mm Weatherby Magnum, 300 Winchester Magnum, 7mm Remington Magnum. It is highly advisable that the rifle which you will use must have a telescopic sight because in most cases you will do all your shooting from respectable distance. You shouldn’t be shooting these animals from more than 300 yards because the trajectory drops off significantly for all calibers. The scopes should be calibrated so that they would be accurate at 200 yards. Doing this, will allow you to make an effective shot from 0 to 300 yards, increasing your chances dramatically.

All in all, choosing the proper moose hunting rifle takes a lot of time and research so it is advisable to read as many reviews and opinions of experienced hunters before purchasing your weapon. After you purchase it you should start exercising with it, get used to using it because otherwise you won’t be as efficient as you have hoped. As they say: practice makes perfect.
