The ancient art of pig sticking. |
|
I wonder how many people have had the pleasure of pig sticking ? Or how many people in this modern world even know what pig sticking is ?
I was spending Christmas with some friends who own a vinyard in Bavaria. After a Christmas day spent eating and drinking far too excessively we needed some excercise to shake away the torper and apathy that hung over us.
My rather typsy chum Boris suggested pig sticking and we all agreed that it was a simply capital idea. He went out into the vinyard and spread out some corn to lure hungry wild boar to come out of the forest. We all then went to the stables and found ourselves a suitable mount. We each armed ourselves with a homemade spear, made from a broom handle with a sharp nail fixed to the end.
We took to the vinyard at the gallop and attacked the screeming wild boar with unashamed gusto ! What glorious fun we all had. We only managed to dispatch one boar to the happy hunting grounds. This we roasted over a log fire.
It was immense fun and I for one will certainly do it again next year. I have already purchased an antique lance for this purpose.
