Wild dog shooting. |
|
Being an Englishman I have a natural love of dogs. Loyal trusty and obiedient companions who remain true whatever the circumstances. No fair weather friend the dog you know !
When stationed in Singapore with the Royal Marines our camp was overun with wild dogs who would scavenge for food, up turn bins and steal from the kitchens. They were a dangerous and unhealthy plague which led to a drop in moral.
I decided to eliminate these vile hell hounds in a charitable and amusing way. Myself and several other Officers each hired a rickshaw driver to peddle us around the camp as we each attempted to bag as many of the dogs as possible. The man who shot the most dogs would buy each of the Marines a bar of chocolate.
Cheered on by about 200 excited Marines we set off like the chariot race in Ben Hur. With our drivers peddling frantically we each veered off down the different lanes between the barracks. Soon rifle fire could be heard and the cries of dying mongrel dogs. Oh how the jolly troops cheered !
Two hours later the last of the dogs had been shot. We counted our kills and to my delight I won. I believe I polished off more than 25 of the furry fiends.
True to my word I bought each man a chocolate bar. It cost me about $25, cheap at half the price !
